Harlequin Duck

The Harlequin Duck is one of the most iconic and sought-after trophy birds in Washington State. With its striking plumage of slate blue, chestnut, and crisp white markings, the drake Harlequin stands out as one of the most beautiful sea ducks in North America. In Washington, Harlequins are most commonly found along fast-moving rivers and rocky coastal shorelines, making them a true challenge for hunters. Unlike many other sea ducks, Harlequins are more solitary or found in small groups, which means setting up for success often requires careful scouting, patience, and the right conditions.

In Washington, Harlequin are highly regulated to protect populations due to declining numbers over the years due to many different factors. The state currently allows only one Harlequin to be harvested per tag holder, making each bird a prized harvest. Washington allows 52 tags to be drawn per season which are drawn during the summer months. This strict limit ensures sustainable management of the species while still offering waterfowlers the opportunity to pursue a once-in-a-lifetime trophy. For many hunters, taking a Harlequin in Washington is considered the pinnacle of their sea duck hunting experience, not only for its rarity but also for the unmatched beauty of the bird.
