Red-Breasted Merganser

The Red-Breasted Merganser is one of the fastest flying ducks in North America and a frequent winter resident of Puget Sound. Easily identified by its spiky crest, red eyes, and narrow bill, this species is built for speed and diving. Males sport a dark green head and chestnut-speckled breast, while females have a rusty head and gray body.

These birds fall under Washington’s general sea duck limits and can often be found feeding in open saltwater areas or near inlets with strong tidal flow. Washington allows for the successful harvest of up to seven mergansers per hunter, that is included with the seven-duck bag limit per day. Their Swift flight and unpredictable movements make them a true test for any hunter. Because of their rarity in some regions and vivid plumage, many hunters consider the Red-Breasted Merganser a prized addition to their trophy collection.
